Dance Social

Hours- 7 Hours

Experience

I planned and ran this event for the University of Derby Dance Team on the lead up to the 2021/22 commitee elections. This event took place on 17.03.21.

To reflect on this experience I have used the Gibbs reflective cycle, 1988.

Description: This event was a social for the University of Derby Dance Team, which I planned and I presented it on the 17th of March 2021. The event was a pyjama party and quiz night virtual social. I created a quiz and researched different games for the evening, as well as promoting it on the Dance team's Facebook page.

Feelings: When preparing to present this event I felt nervous as I had no idea how many people were going to be interested in the social, and therefore did not know how many attendees there was going to be. I also felt excited to be able to speak to some of the rest of the team more, as it had been difficult to meet them due to COVID-19 and the lockdown restrictions.

Evaluation: Overall the event went very well and all of the attendees said that they enjoyed the evening. All of the games ran smoothly and the quiz was interesting for everyone. The experience was positive because there was quite a lot of attendees and once started I became more relaxed and enjoyed presenting the social. As it was a virtual event it was difficult to speak to individual people, however in this social it was not a problem as everyone spoke to everyone.

Analysis: From planning and presenting this social, I realisied that I enjoyed the role of social secretary and I ran for it in the 2021/22 elections. I believe the event was a success because the other candidate and I recieved the same amount of votes for the position.

Conclusion: To make this social better, I could have had more games to get to know eachother better at the begining of the evening. Also, I could have found a better platform for the event where the games could be played on there instead of me having to share my screen.

Action Plan: If I was to plan another virtual social, I would research different platforms to host the event to enable more games to be played. Also I would find out more about virtual event planning to ensure I can make it as enaging as possible for the attendees.

Skills

Virtual Events

Due to the coronavirus pandemic

virtual events have become more

and more popular across the world.

This social gave me an insight into virtual events and what goes into planning them. To improve my virtual event skills I would like to do a course on them as it would give me more confidence in the content needed

to plan a successful virtual

event.

Creativity

This event required a lot of

creativity to ensure that it had not

been done before and also would interest

people enough to get them to attend. To make this social interesting I made the theme pyjama party, this also fit with it being virtual and all of the attendees were at home, so it was good to be comfy.

Creativity is an important skill to have when planning any event as it will

help to create a successful

event.

Willow Buytenhuys, Social Secretary University of Derby Dance Team

Frankie hosted a social for the derby dance team in the run up to committee elections! She hosted a pyjama party virtual social on teams (due to covid we couldn’t meet in person) on the 17th March at 8pm. She had just over a week to plan and in that short amount of time was able to organise a successful social with a complete plan that I requested to have beforehand incase anything goes wrong connection wise etc. I was really impressed with what Frankie brought to the table as she managed to get a good amount of people and keep everyone entertained the whole few hours. For her first social I couldn’t have asked for more than she delivered!
